My name is Rachel Hamm and I graduated from Quinnipiac in December 2018 with my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Sociology. I came into to Quinnipiac as a psychology major and quickly realized it wasn’t the path for me. I then switched my major to math based on my interest in the subject. Through working towards my degree in mathematics, I filled my pre-requisite classes with sociology, starting with Sociology 101. Sociology was a new subject matter to me, but I quickly became very interested in what it had to present. Learning about all the different aspects of social life from race and gender, to aging, to sports, to drugs and alcohol, to children and policies, I became hooked. My favorite part of learning sociology was that to me it was all new and each class was so different from the next yet could all be connected back to one another by displaying the innerworkings of society.
Being a member of the field hockey team here at Quinnipiac, I was awarded the opportunity for a fifth year. At this moment I was just a math major with a large amount of sociology classes under my belt and an extreme interest in the subject. This was a great opportunity for me as I was given the chance to continue my athletic career as well as pick up a double major. Having the chance to get my Bachelor’s in sociology was so rewarding for me.
Now, after a semester off, I am going back to school to get my Masters in Secondary education. In becoming a future teacher, sociology will put me a step ahead as I am educated on the world we live in and the society we are surrounded by. I am so thankful for the professors that have worked with me in my time at Quinnipiac. There love for the subject is a huge reason of what drew me to it. For anyone that is undecided or unsure of what to study, I highly recommend adding a sociology class to your class list.
I am so thankful for my educational opportunity at Quinnipiac. It made me realize that it is never too late to pursue something that you are passionate about. Take a chance because the reward is far greater than the risk.
