Students are trained to play leading role in local government: public relations, police, civil engineering, community social programs, education, arts & cultural programs, business/economic development, urban planning, environment, and elderly services.
*FOR ANY MAJOR: Applications open every March. All students entering Jr. or Sr. year in Fall., federal work-study eligibility is a plus but not required. Students are selected on a combination of the following factors: (1) Interest and motivation to develop community leadership and public service skills; (2) strong academic achievement (3.0 and above); (3) demonstrated effective written and interpersonal communication skills.
*PAID work-study public service work: Fulltime pay over 9 weeks (June 4-August 4), is around $4,200 pre-tax in student aid. Students selected for the Fellowship receive an expansion of their work-study financial aid, or a work-based scholarship.
*Campus housing is furnished for Fellows. NO extra charge.
*Academic Fellowship: One free QU credit, fieldtrips, weekly Seminar meetings over dinner, with experts and leaders in local and state government.

Description: Presidential Public Service Fellows are paid, full-time Quinnipiac student employees working as full-time public servants in local government offices. Students are placed in offices and policy areas according to their interests, prior courses/skills and the needs of the Town. Students assist with public policy research, assist with public relations, and manage community programs that serve people in the community. Students may be placed in Mayor’s Office, Engineering/Public Works, Zoning, Youth Services and Economic Development. Fellows meet weekly with guest speakers, and go into the field for educational experiences. Job descriptions are listed at the end of this application.
3.0 cumulative GPA is required. In addition, Fellows have weekly meetings and educational field experiences together. Fellows receive one credit, and receive summer housing at Quinnipiac for no extra charge. The Fellowship starts June 5, and ends August 4. Applicants must have achieved Junior status by the start of the Fellowship. Graduates are not eligible. Presidential Public Service Fellows may not hold any other QU job or Fellowship.

* Eligibility: FOR ANY MAJOR: All students entering Jr. or Sr. year in Fall 2023. Graduates of QU are not eligible.
*Exclusivity: Fellows are not allowed to be committed to any other full time job or fellowship. In rare occasions, students may take one online course, or a part-time campus job, but only if approved by the Fellowship Director.
*Criteria: Students are selected on a combination of the following factors: (1) Interest and motivation to develop community leadership and public service skills; (2) strong academic achievement (3.0 and above); (3) demonstrated effective written and interpersonal communication skills and (4) no current student life or residential life disciplinary action, along with financial and academic good standing with the University and (5) no other summer job or internship.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS OF FELLOW APPOINTMENTS
Hamden Mayor’s Office Fellow: The Fellow working in the Hamden Mayor’s Office will get full immersion in the daily functioning of the epicenter of municipal management. This year’s Fellow can expect to work on several ongoing projects such as the Hamden Farmer’s Markets, summer festivals and events, the monthly Town Newsletter, public relations opportunities and press releases, various policy developments and research tasks, and the development of grant proposals.
Engineering Fellow: Advanced Engineering students only. The Fellow be directly assisting the Director of Engineering in Hamden on a variety of ongoing engineering projects. Applicants must have completed MER 210, CER 210 and at least one 300 level CER or MER course. Fellow will gain extensive field work assisting public works in managing engineering problems, including the design of bridges, catch basins, and the other engineering projects currently ongoing in Hamden.
Hamden Youth Services and Community Services Fellow: The Youth Services Fellow will assist with planning and implementation of summer programming including Youth Employment, Community Service Programs, the School Age Child Care Program, National Night Out, and Farmer’s Market kids’ activities.
Public Works Fellow: This Fellow is assigned to work directly in support of the Director of Public Works in North Haven. The primary focus will be managerial. The Fellow will develop grant-writing skills and assist the Director in overseeing sanitation, planning and zoning, engineering. Tasks will include research, economic analysis and interactions with State agencies. The student in this position may be in any major, but civil engineering background is helpful.
Hamden Economic and Community Development Fellow: This Fellow provides assistance to members of the Department of Economic and Community Development for projects and programs funded by Town, State and Federal sources. Projects may include Data Collection and survey work for various programs, (including neighborhood revitalization activities), coordination of merchant and community group activities. The Fellow will also assist with the Town, Economic and Community Development web-site(s), writing press releases, working in the Town Business Incentive program, and grant-writing.
Hamden Town Clerk Fellow: The Fellow in the Town Clerk’s office will deal with varied projects related to serving members of the public directly, historical-archival research, data input, and maintenance of other Town Clerk records. The selected individual will have to deal with multi-tasking, some interruption of task because of public contact, possess great attention to detail.
Hamden Planning & Zoning Fellow: The Planning & Zoning Fellow will experience first-hand how a public sector office operates, while addressing critical key needs of the Department. This includes assisting members of the public seeking answers to questions, helping zoning officials, learning about environmental protection and economic development policy. Other duties include accompanying enforcement personnel to site inspections, preparing for public hearings of land use commissions, and assisting with student housing applications. The fellow will be introduced to the public hearing process, in which applicants present their development projects and members of the public have the opportunity to speak in favor or against them. The fellow will also work with staff to understand the issues involved with these applications prior to meetings.
Hamden Arts and Recreation Fellow: The Fellow will alternate between the Recreation Dept. and the Arts Council. In Recreation, the Fellow will assist with the development of various youth programs, and in the Arts Council, the Fellow will assist with the research and writing of a Hamden Cultural Directory. Various other tasks related to the planning of Town events and activities may also be assigned.
