The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures encourages students to explore many exciting travel-abroad opportunities with faculty members and also through the Department of Cultural and Global Engagement which offers personalized attention to students as they decide on their international destinations.
A recent faculty-led trip was conducted by Prof. Mizuho Aussicker who traveled with her JP 200 students to Japan where they visited the old capital, Kyoto, with its fascinating temples and shrines, the historically significant city of Hiroshima to learn about peace, and the current capital, Tokyo. Students enjoyed the Shinkansen (the bullet train which travels at 200mph), the great torii gate in Miayajima, Ryokan, a Japanese-style inn, authentic Japanese cuisine, including conveyer belt sushi with entertainment and a tea ceremony. Other highlights include viewing the world’s largest Buddha statue (49’2) and deer feeding. Needless to say, traveling to the country is the best way to learn about the culture!
