I am Rebecca (Becca) Hayes, and I graduated from Quinnipiac in 2025 with a BA in Sociology. While at QU, I also completed an individualized minor in Child Life. When I enrolled in Quinnipiac my freshman year, I was unsure of what I wanted to major in. I was an interdisciplinary studies major, but knew it was not where my heart lay. After taking a sociology class with Dr. Solomon in the spring of my freshman year, I knew I wanted to major in sociology. I loved learning how to understand the world through a sociological lens and realized how much I enjoy researching the world we live in. I created an Individualized Minor in Child Life because of my passion for working with kids and my interest in numerous child development courses at Quinnipiac. As I graduate from QU, my future plans include applying to MSW programs to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. You can pursue many jobs as an LCSW, but some that interest me are being a school social worker or a child therapist. My interest in this type of work and master’s program came from the internship I completed.
During my senior year at QU, I interned at Adam’s House, a non-profit grief house. At Adam’s House, I participated in an eight-week grief program as a “FIG”, which stands for Friend in Grief. I helped children cope with grief and created new activities for the grief program. This program opened my eyes to the future career I am interested in.
Throughout my time at Quinnipiac, I also had the opportunity to participate in activities outside of my major. I was a member of the Honors Program and was inducted into the Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta. I was also elected as the PR officer for the Sociology Club for the 24/25 academic year. The Sociology Club provides fun ways to get the QU community thinking sociologically. I was also the Hospital Relations Committee Captain at QTHON my senior year, which was a wonderful experience fundraising for Connecticut Children’s Hospital. Lastly, I danced on the Kickline Dance team and performed with the team at Quinnipiac basketball games, sorority events, and at QTHON.
My time at Quinnipiac as a Sociology major and Child Life minor has been influential in providing me with the educational and professional skills needed for my future. For any student considering becoming a Sociology major at Quinnipiac…DO IT! I could not imagine graduating from any other program, and I am grateful for the professors and people at this wonderful university. I have learned much and gained a community here at Quinnipiac, so I hope future students can experience the same.
