Community Internship Program Placement Guide

    • ▶︎   Create Your Placement Journal
Create a new placement journal.  Your placement journal will provide you with a means of keeping track of your internship search.  It will also give the internship coordinator a way of keeping track of your progress.
    • ▶︎   Meet with the Internship Coordinator
If you need help finding internships, you may reach out to the CAS Advising Commons in CAS1-209
    • ▶︎   Search
    • ▶︎   Apply

Making the Initial Contact – Send an Inquiry Email Introduce yourself and your year and major, what type of experience you are looking for.

Ask about the availability of fieldwork.

Include that you are required to do an internship 10-12 hours/week.

Inquire about an interview to find out more about the placement.

Please note that if you leave a message at a site and you do not hear back, initiate contact again after three full business days have passed.

Keep a record of who you contact and when.

Update your Placement Journal (section 3.)

    • ▶︎   Interview

Professionalism is key.  Wear appropriate attire – even for a Zoom interview.  Make sure that your surroundings are clean and professional in appearance. Do not conduct your interview from your bed.

Bring a list of questions with you.

Come prepared to answer questions about the Community Internship Program requirements.

Do not be afraid to ask about your schedule.

At the time of the interview, it is your responsibility to negotiate with the supervisor the exact nature of your job responsibilities.

Ask about parking, transportation costs and other logistical information.

Send a thank-you email no later than one day after the interview.

Update your Placement Journal (section 3)

    • ▶︎   Accept an Offer

When you receive an offer, it is important to verify the information you talked about in your interview including: number of hours, job responsibilities, and who will be supervising.

You may receive more than one offer.  While it might be a difficult decision, remember more than one internship is better than none at all!  If you are interested in doing both, you may ask to defer one of the internships until the following semester.

Confirm your internship by filling out section 4 of your placement journal.

    • ▶︎   Learning Agreement

Complete and sign your learning agreement with your internship supervisor.  You will find a link in section 5 of your placement journal

This must be done before the semester begins!

    • ▶︎   Meet with Supervisor and Faculty Internship Coordinator
Before your internship begins, you may schedule a meeting with your supervisor, the internship coordinator and yourself.  This will give your supervisor and the internship coordinator time to share information about the internship and the program.  Any questions may be answered at this time.
